Age Friendly CENTRAL MASS

According to the U.S Census Bureau, persons age 60 and older currently account for 22.4% of the total population in Worcester County. More specifically in the Central Massachusetts regional planning area, the UMASS Donahue Institute suggests a higher percentage of 24%. And by 2040, persons age 60 and older are projected to increase to nearly 30% of the total population across the region's 40 communities. The Age Friendly Central Mass initiative was developed to ensure that ALL residents are able to maintain active, healthy, safe, and connected lifestyles as they age in Central Massachusetts.

Age Friendly Communities

Age friendly and the communities involved enable people of all ages to actively participate in community activities, engage in outdoor and public recreation, access and utilize goods and services, and have equitable access to affordable housing, transportation, and community programs. Additionally, an age-friendly community will continue to support older adults even after they are no longer able to care for themselves. This is conceptualized through AARP's 8 Domains of Livability.
